THE BLOW OUT is real life stories full of menace, dark romance and dislocation. THE BLOW OUT is acid blues guitar, jazz influenced drumming, rock solid bass. Butterfield inspired electric harp – great blues, style and attitude to burn!
In February 2023 THE BLOW OUT released a SAMPLER EP to welcome this new band onto the music scene. It jumped into #15 on the Australian blues charts with very little promotion.
Now the full album ‘VERSION OF YOU” is available. Twelve tracks, including eight originals, it heralds a significant new band with first rate songwriting, musicianship and an enthusiastic fan base.
THE SONGS – Commentary
THE PLAYERS –
Dennis ‘Salty’ Trevarthen – Vocals, Harmonica, Guitar
Morgan Klose – Guitar
Peter Beulke – Bass
Peter Hodges – Drums, Percussion
Daryl Roberts – Electric Piano, Hammond
Paulie Bignell – Guitar on ‘Lovin’ Cup’
1 That Ain’t Lovin’ Me (6:56) Trevarthen
A West Coast feel on a tour up the East Coast. A story voiced in heartbreak and disassociation. Neil Youngish guitar lines over a rockin rhythm section.
2 Turn On You (5:16) Trevarthen, Klose, Beulke, Hodges
A take on a tight shuffle that fits right in the groove. Salty’s Low D harp rumbles down below where it counts. Celebrating the tides of change – tables do turn!
3 Road Song (5:24) Trevarthen
A new Aussie blues rock anthem loved by The Blow Out fans. It drives like a wheel and opens new horizons. Soaring Hammond over Morgan’s pulsating lead guitar lines. In the end Salty pleads ‘I just do my time’ – redeeming mantra to life’s repetitions.
4 Snatch It Back and Hold It (4:21) Guy, Blakemore
A Blow Out take on the Junior Wells classic. Tight and driving blues harp and guitar working as one.
5 Version of You (4:36) Trevarthen, Klose, Beulke, Hodges
The title track from the album. A blues rocking screamer that scatters the story line in a demented pleading for sanity. Likened to 60’s era Dylanesque stream of consciousness.
6 Busy Signal (7:20) Trevarthen
Slow and laid back story of noir love. Salty builds the vocal into a brazen blues harp howl that mirrors the singers dilemma.
7 Loving Cup (6:33) Butterfield
A masterful re branding of the Butterfield tune. Sinewy and sparse, Salty’s restrained vocal is held captive to Pete Hodges jazz drum lines and Paulie Bignell’s washed out guitar. Another crowd favourite.
8 Smokin’ Alone (4:21) Trevarthen, Klose, Beulke, Hodges
A crazy fun tour down south to Nawlins. Daz Robert’s Professor Longhair keys track the Ya Ya Gris call and refrain of the band, while Salty’s scatting lyric keeps everything unhinged.
9 Blues Why You Worry Me (4:24) Musselwhite
The Blow Out deliver a Charlie Mussellwhite shuffle in G, keeping it with respect to the master. A blues crowd dancing fav.
10 Sweet Apple Blues (3:56) Trevarthen, Klose, Beulke, Hodges
The closest thing to a love song on the album. The Blow Out marvel at a new found romance and how good it feels. Held firm by Pete Beulke’s lyrical bass lines.
11 Get Out Of My Life, Woman (4:01) Toussaint
Paying respect to the classic. A tight and demanding rendition of this blues staple.
12 Bauhaus (10:19) Trevarthen, Klose, Beulke, Hodges
Over ten minutes of instrumental bliss. This time Morgan and Salty trade discordant guitar lines over an unrelenting bass and drum structure from Beulke and Hodges. Inspired by the angular and sharp lines of the early C20th design movement, this piece brings it alive in all it’s sonic glory. Listen loud in a darkened room.
