As the title implies, “Version of You Sampler” is a sampler, an aural precursor to a soon-to- be released full length album and a five song introduction to The Blowout, a tough, cohesive unit exploring a mix of moods, sounds and rhythms. Fronted by Salty Trevarthen, whose gruff vocals and scorched earth harmonica are ably supported by three seasoned firebrands well-schooled in various Blues idioms, The Blowout come out swinging like George Foreman.
Three covers and two originals make up the Version of You Sampler –The Blowout rip through Paul Butterfield’s Lovin’ Cup and Charlie Musselwhite’s Blues Why You Worry with a passion that gives both songs a certain freshness. San Pedro Slim’s Tables Do Turn, lyrically revised with a stylistic shift, heads for the back alley and ignores all the clichés that so often cripple modern Blues.
Salty’s two originals expose The Blowout’s flair for blending genres – Road Song is muscular Country Rock channeled through Mick Taylor era Rolling Stones. The seven minute Busy Signal, a sinewy slow Blues with a subtle undercurrent of jazzy R&B, allows The Blowout to extend without wearing out their welcome. Above all, A Version of You Sampler presents a combo that always deliver on their promise of original and authentic blues. Enjoy!
